Albert was an errand boy in 1911, living at home with his parents at 14 Paradise Square, Duke Street, Taunton.  His father, also called Albert, was a bricklayer and his mother was called Amy.  After his death his parents received the following letter from Revd R.W. Dugdale.

"Dear Mrs. Grigg - You will probably have heard already the sad news of your son's death.  He was killed in action on the 28th of last month, and buried in a small cemetery just behind the line, where he lies with many other brave men and boys who have given their lives for England.  A cross will be put up in his memory, and the grave will be well kept.  It is impossible for us to say how sorry we feel for those who, like yourself, are really bearing the heaviest burden of the war.  But you must let it be some comfort to you in your sorrow to know that he died in so good a cause.  With deepest sympathy, I remain, yours truly, R.W. Dugdale, chaplain".

He died three days before his unit took part in the start of the Battle of the Somme.
