Henry Coleman grew up in Taunton, the son of James and Emily Coleman who lived at 2 Laburnum Street, Taunton.  In 1908, aged 24, he married Fanny Andrews, with whom he would have four children.  By 1911 Henry and Fanny had moved to Bridgwater, and by 1916 he had moved to Gloucester where he was employed as a Collar Cutter.  On 29th August 1916 he enlisted into the Training Reserve of the Gloucestershire Regiment.  He transferred to the Labour Company in August 1917 and was sent to France in September 1917.  He was injured and died of his wounds on 13th April 1918.

The Taunton Courier printed the following obituary:

"News has been received by Mrs Coleman 2, Laburnum Street, Taunton, of the death from wounds on the 13th April at the 10th Stationary Hospital St Omar France of Private Henry James Coleman.  He leaves a widow and four young children to mourn their loss.  In August last the deceased joined a Labour Company, after having been rejected five times, and six weeks later was sent to France.  Mrs Coleman has also been notified that a younger son Herbert George Coleman age 22 years is lying in hospital at Sheffield with serious wounds in the shoulders which he received in action in France.  This is the third time he has been wounded.  Mrs Coleman also had her son Walter aged 28 years killed on the 19th April 1915.  In addition to this bereavement three nephews have been killed in France, and she has lost by death her husband and only brother, all in three years.  Much sympathy will be extended to her."
