Harry Robert was the son of William John and Elizabeth Ann Batstone, one of seven children. He was born in Hatch Beauchamp in 1894 but  by 1901 was living in Bampton where his  father was working as a dairyman. By 1911 the family had moved to Hopkins Farm, Bishops Lydeard where William was farm bailiff and Harry Robert was working as a farm labourer.

As part of the 1st Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry Harry would have been in the 4th Division serving in France.  On 2nd November 1918 the Battalion took part in the Battle of Valenciennes, fighting in and around the village of Preseau.  The action continued through the day and into the night, with the loss of 5 officers and 88 other ranks, which included Private Batstone.
