Herbert Reed was the son of Frank and Julia Reed, who lived at 11 Gyffarde Street, Taunton.  His father was a whitesmith, while Herbert studied at St James School and in 1911 was listed as being a Corn Merchant's Assistant.  He enlisted with the Middlesex Regiment on 15th May 1916 and served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders.  He was wounded in action on 3rd April 1918, probably in the Battle of the Avre preventing the German offensive towards Amiens, and died on 16th April.
