Alfred Waiter was the grandson of Henry (a labourer) and Selena Waiter.  Selena died in 1897 and Henry in 1912.  Alfred had joined the army prior to the war, enlisting in Cardiff into the Welsh Regiment, and is listed in the 1911 census as being stationed in Egypt.

On the outbreak of war the 1st Battalion of the Welsh Regiment was stationed in India, but was soon recalled home, arriving in England on 22nd December 1914.  It was soon transferred to France, landing in Le Havre on 18th January 1915.  The Battalion took part in the 2nd Battle of Ypres where it sustained heavy casualties.  Alfred was killed on the last day of the battle, 25th May 1915.

Alfred's uncle, Samuel Waiter, also died during the war and is listed on the church war memorial.
