Frederick was the son of Frederick and Sarah Jane Thorn who by 1901 were living with the family at 43, Albermarle Road. Frederick had three sisters and a younger brother Arthur. Frederick senior was a G.W.R engine driver and in 1911 Frederick, aged 16, was working as an engineer’s pattern maker apprentice. 

According  to Borough records Frederick spent 17 months at home and 2 years 9 months fighting abroad sadly dying in Egypt after the war had ended.

Frederick’s brother Arthur also enlisted as a gunner but in the Royal Field Artillery and he survived the war.
