Walter is a mystery as he is described on the CWG site as a ‘native of Taunton’ but there is no evidence to support this. The inscription was paid for by Mrs Susan Ham of Box Cottage, Bridge Street, Taunton, and we have not been able to establish any link between the two.  He is not listed on the Borough list but enlisted in Kingston on Thames and was described as living in Ilford.

There is a record of a Walter Clarkson Walling in 6 Co RGA in 1911 but he is aged 21 which doesn’t fit with the above where he is supposedly 32 in 1916.

Interestingly in the 1911 census for Taunton there is a Francis William Walling, aged 18, lodging with a Mrs King in Fowler Street but we have been unable to find a direct link.
